  1. 1737-1793. US revolutionary politician. As
  2. president of the Continental Congress
  3. 1775-77, he was the first to sign the
  4. Declaration of Independence in 1776. Because
  5. he signed it in a large, bold hand (in
  6. popular belief, so that it would be big
  7. enough for George III to see), his name
  8. became a colloquial term for a signature in
  9. the USA. He coveted command of the
  10. Continental Army, deeply resenting the
  11. selection of George Washington. He was
  12. governor of Massachusetts 1780-85 and
  13. 1787-93.
